Needle felting is a popular craft that involves using barbed needles to interlock wool fibers and shape them into various objects. One popular item to needle felt is animals. If you're a beginner, the following steps will guide you through the process of needle felting your own furry friend.

Materials you will need:

  • Felting needles (You can buy a felting needle kit which contains different sizes of needles for different uses)
  • Wool roving (Choose the color of your choice)
  • Foam pad (Used as a base to work on)
  • Scissors

Step 1: Prepare the wool roving Take a handful of wool roving and fluff it up so it’s easy to handle. If you’re needle felting a larger animal, you may need more wool roving.

Step 2: Lay down the foundation Start by laying down a small amount of wool roving on your foam pad. This will be the foundation for your animal.

Step 3: Start needle felting Using the felting needle, gently stab the wool roving to start shaping it into the desired shape. Be careful not to stab too hard as you can damage the needle or your foam pad.

Step 4: Add more wool roving As you continue to needle felt, you can add more wool roving as needed to bulk up the shape of your animal.

Step 5: Shape and define Once you have the basic shape of your animal, start to refine and shape it into the desired form. Use the different sizes of felting needles to achieve the details you want.

Step 6: Finish up When you're satisfied with the shape and details of your animal, gently trim away any excess wool roving with scissors. You may also want to add any finishing touches, such as eyes or a tail.

And that's it! With a little bit of patience and practice, you can create your very own needle felted animal. Have fun and let your creativity run wild!

Note: Needle felting can be addictive, so be warned! You may find yourself making a whole herd of needle felted animals before you know it.
